The rope is one of the only two essential tools in any sport, and for most of us, the rope is also the only thing we use other than water.
As we climb onto the ropes for a big run, our bodies scream for a rest, but our minds tell us the rope is too tight and our bodies are too heavy to climb up. We look at other people having great runs, yet we're stuck on the ground. It isn't for you, or the kids? I didn't think that I could get down the rope.

I kept having a feeling that I couldn't get down it and that's why we are so bad at rope jumping, even though I could see the other people were running down there. It's not worth it for you to do it? I don't know. I don't want to hurt the other people's knee. It took me a long time to understand that the rope was just another tool. Once I learned to use the rope, I didn't worry about anything else. But to use the rope was to lose the rope. To use the rope was to feel trapped and unable to jump. A rope is a rope for me, and all of us are bound with a rope. It is to be used, not abused. I hate to take the rope from another person. It shouldn't be taken from anyone, least of all from someone with a bad knee. I had an older brother who used to throw his rope around. He used it for everything.
From learning how to play lacrosse to jumping on the trampoline to jump rope to swing a bat. I don't know how he did it. He never failed out of school. He died at the age of thirty-seven. He was a tough man. He didn't have much going for him. But he was so close to me. We were so close. When I was growing up, I didn't have a brother. He was the brother I always missed and he was a master with the jump rope. He will always be missed.
